Mt Montgomery – Mt Dial return
Mt Montgomery is the most northerly mountain in the Dial Range. We will ascend a less used (steep) track to the summit then return by the conventional track to the PCT. From here we will continue along the PCT to Keddies Creek where we will leave the PCT and climb up to Mt Dial. Our return will be on the PCT along the beautiful banks of the Myrtle Creek. It is a delightful walk through varying landscapes and well worth the effort, well that is what I think. I do love the Mighty Dial. The usual applies – rain jacket, sturdy footwear, water, lunch and snacks.

We will follow the Arm River Track and turn off just after crossing Wurragarra Creek. We then head up a somewhat scrubby gully which opens up to coral fern and alpine grass valleys and head to the Tarn of Islands. Hopefully the patches of Fagus put on good show. We will set up camp and for those who wish we will go out to Lake Rosa . The next day, depending on Wurragarra's level, we will follow another valley and take a detour to Basil Steers hut 3 and then return to the main track. If the creek level is too high we will return by the same route as the day before.

May up on the plateau is going to be a coin toss weather wise. Anyway, this is a lovely stroll near Lake Mackenzie. It's a walk of around 12km give or take and should take about 6 hours. The car park is already over 1000m high so there is not much climbing involved. We'll follow the Blue Peaks track most of the way before heading up to climb both of the Blue Peaks for some pretty good views. We'll then drop back down to the track for the return to the cars.

During Autumn and early Winter, the days are cooling a little but still plenty of daylight, so why not join us for a pleasant outing in the bush somewhere. Where we go will as always depend on any critical areas of concern and the weather at the time. A good chance to explore parts of the PCT at a slower pace and be close to nature … very close in fact as you will be picking it up after clearing works.

This is an easy circuit walk of approximately 4-5 km that passes Silver Falls, Castra Falls and Step Falls. It is a good track, but it is steep in places and can be muddy. Hopefully there should be some good fungi along the walk.

I think this may be the third attempt for a visit to Lake Balmoral. The first cancelled due to the Plateau being closed, the second to unfavourable weather. Hopefully, third time lucky. I plan to approach the lake from Higgs Track. Once we reach Lady Lake we will be walking off-track through low alpine vegetation.

The West Coast fires should be out by May so the plan is to go and see just how black and awful things are down there. Meet 8am opposite the Ridgley shop. This is the 2 hour walk - 2hours to drive down - 2 hours steady climb up - 2 hours walk down again and 2 hours drive back to the coast. We will have morning cuppa as we put on our boots at the river. If Corinna has survived the fires we will enjoy a cleansing ale or cool drink before heading home. Join me for a sad walk out west.

The plan is to walk in via Hansons Peak to Lake Rodway. Here there will be a choice of platform camping or use of the hut. Depending on arrival time, fitness and feeling of the group, we can head straight up to explore Lindon Tarns that afternoon which then leaves the next day open to other possibilities, such as, Barn Bluff, or exploring the many waterfalls in Waterfall Valley. Otherwise, we can meander up to Lindon Tarns on Sunday and enjoy a more relaxed day in the area.

Meet 9am at the Vietnam War Memorial Park, 46 Victoria Pde Devonport toilets. We will follow the Devonport cycle & walking track beside the Mersey River to the Harbour Master Cafe for a quick coffee on the way past. We'll then continue under the Bass Highway on the Riverside track towards Horsehead Creek and Saleyard Rd at Quoiba. A new connector bridge is getting built nearby and if finished we may continue to Maidstone Park at Spreyton before returning to the Elimatta Hotel at 15 Victoria Parade for lunch. We will then walk the short distance back to our cars. Come and explore Devonport! We should walk about 12kms return or a bit less depending how far we venture. It is a mainly flat walk.

Mt Gnomon to Mt Dial and return
It is always a delightful day in the Mighty Dial and this walk will have all the elements that allow for some challenge, views and lots of fresh air. We will meet at the Mt Gnomon Carpark at 12pm. The track up to Mt Gnomon is steepish however the views from the top are breathtaking. After a bite to eat, we will continue along the saddle to Mt Dial. Even though it is a return trip, there is always more to see and experience. I expect that walking time will be around 3 hours of up and down. The usual applies - good walking boots, hat, rain jacket, food, water and a smile.

Lake Fergus is a lovely spot to camp and gives you access to several interesting places to visit. I plan to walk into Lake Fergus and set up camp, then head off track to climb Pine Tier South highpoint. Next day walk back out the same way and then as we are in the area make a short drive and then a short walk to Smith Tops. This involves a bit of off track walking and rock scrambling. Hopefully we still get the nice Autumn weather, cool but clear.

Information day for prospective members
Venue: Apex House in the morning, then Mt Montgomery (Dial Range) in the afternoon
Organiser: Robin Collins (mob 0452 286 251)
The day gives an introduction to bushwalking, some information about the club, as well an opportunity to ask any questions you have. The group is likely to include a large variety of experience levels. Even experienced bushwalkers have found they have something they can learn from the day. Please bring a pack suitable for a day walk. If you don’t have a daypack, let me know as I have spares.
Note that I will be out of reliable contact in the second half of April as I will making my way across a mountain range in Norway. I will be back in civilization late April.

So, being the shortest day of the year, we don’t want a particularly long walk. To get to the top requires almost a 1000m ascent in just a tad over 3 klicks. So, a pretty solid uphill trip. Given the time of year the weather will probably be a 50/50 proposition. The advantage of this walk though is that most of the ascent is reasonably sheltered in the event we cop some of those nasty cold blustery west or south west winds. And once you get to the top of the escarpment it’s not far at all to the actual trig. There are a couple of climby bits and one or two spots with a handline which can add to the interest. As usual I won’t bother if the weather is really too bad. Hopefully we’ll get a decent day as the views from the top are pretty good.

Mt Duncan returning to our cars via the Hales Spur
We will meet at the Mt Gnomon Carpark at 12 noon. From the carpark we walk up the road to the Mt Duncan sign then follow this track up Mt Duncan. From the top of Mt Duncan we connect to the Hales Spur Track and descend a different way off Mt Duncan. I have allowed 5 hours return however it has never taken that long. As always bring a good quality rain jacket, good hiking boots, a warm top or thermals, water and snacks. Probably a good idea to have some food before we start walking.

A beach walk in winter can be a somewhat more attractive proposition than a potentially freezing and miserable day going up some wretched mountain. Methinks. Unless I’ve got the tides wrong and we all get washed out to sea. Anway being a beach walk it means no uphill which is a bonus. We will have to do a little bit of a car shuttle at the start as this will be a one-way trip. In half decent weather this is quite a pleasant and relaxing walk of about 12 klicks or so. Just the ticket for a day out in winter.

Meet at the Forth Pub at 9am. Come and help celebrate twenty years of walking the Wilmot River with our group. We will decide on the day what we will do depending on the weather and group. My first trip up the Wilmot River was led by Helen Faber from River Road side on the 23/7/2005. It was a misty foggy damp day and we met up with Fred Groenier as he crossed from the East Bank. It was well before the tracks of today and I hope you will join me for this memorable occasion. A celebration drink will follow at the Forth Pub after!
